ROBOTECH: THE MOVIE

Also known as “The Untold Story”, Robotech the Movie was made by modifying footage from the feature film Megazone 23: Part 1. As I understand it, there are two versions of this movie in circulation. The first is a more direct conversion of the Megazone 23 footage. Unfortunately, some people responsible for production felt the movie was not "Robotech" enough. To remedy this, they spliced in some footage from Southern Cross, and animated a new “happier” ending. This formulated the second and final version of the film. There was a brief theatrical release in the Dallas, Texas area. Unfortunately, it did not perform well and was not released nationally.

There was a video release of this film in the United Kingdom. It was a PAL VHS release and as far as I know, it is the only licensed release of this film.

The likelihood of any new release of the Robotech movie is slim to none. Harmony Gold has allowed their rights to the Megazone 23 footage expire. Without these rights, a licensed release would be nearly impossible. While I have not seen this movie myself, by most accounts, it was not a worthwhile undertaking, and is no great loss to the Robotech Universe.
